What should I expect for my first practice?
During your first few practices, the majority of time will be spent introducing you to our practice, including dojo etiquette, introduction to some of our basic techniques, and perhaps your first kata (form). The focus will be on learning. Students who have been practicing for longer periods of time will be focused on more intricate aspects of the movements, where as you will be focused on learning the gross movements. Instructors are very patient with beginners, because they remember what it was like to get started. The expectation is that you try your best, that’s it!
I don’t have a karate uniform. What should I wear?
You can wear any loose fitting or workout/athletic clothing until we help you get a karate uniform.
How do I get a karate uniform?
Uniforms can be ordered from Shotokan Karate of America after you join the organization. You can also order uniform for any number of online retailers, as long as it is a plain white karate uniform.
How much does a uniform cost, and when do I need one?
Uniforms cost between $30 – $45 depending on size and where you order it from. The Chicago Shotokan instructors will help you find the best option for you. There is no problem with you wearing workout clothing until you are able to get a uniform, but eventually, a uniform is required for practice.
How much contact is there during sparring?
As a beginner, you will not be hit at all during sparring. The goal will be to learn the etiquette, the drills, the footwork, the techniques, etc. Over time, as you become more comfortable with the drill, the instructors will gradually start to come a little bit faster, and a little bit harder. This is done slowly and gradually, so that you continue to learn in a safe environment. Eventually, you will be able to face your sparring partner full speed, actually trying to hit them (and them trying to hit you), and be able to handle the situation without injury.
I am currently out of shape. Am I going to struggle?
You will not struggle. You will gradually get stronger, and faster. Our practice is relative to the individual. In the beginning, more focus will be placed on learning the techniques. Your balance, cardio, and strength will improve during this phase. Gradually, your stances will get lower, and your movements will become faster. You will find that you can start pushing yourself harder, and harder over time. This is a gradual process, and there is no expectation that someone just starting out will be able to push at the level as someone who has been training for many years.
Is prior martial arts experience required?
No, prior martial arts is not required at all.
Can I train at other SKA dojos if I travel or move?
